چکیده

English spelling is highly inconsistent in terms of simple sound-to-spelling correspondences, but is more consistent when context is taken into account. For example, the choice between ch and tch is determined by the preceding vowel (coach, roach vs. catch, hatch). We investigated children’s sensitivity to vowel context when spelling consonants in monosyllabic nonwords. Children in grade two (seven years old) tended to correctly use vowel context when spelling word-final consonants (codas). This use of context was progressively stronger for children in grades three and five and in college students. The increase is not due to differences in vocabulary, because the contextual patterns are similar in reading materials targeted at all four age groups. Vowel letters (graphotactics) had a stronger influence than vowel pronunciation. Children also used vowel context when spelling word-initial consonants (onsets); this effect was as strong for second graders as for adults. Thus novice spellers take advantage of graphotactic information.

Spelling as Statistical Learning 1 Running head: SPELLING AS STATISTICAL LEARNING Spelling as Statistical Learning: Using Consonantal Context to Spell Vowels

Although English lacks one-to-one relationships between sounds and spellings, considering the context in which a phoneme occurs can often aid in selecting a spelling. For example, /ɑ/ is typically spelled as a when it follows /w/, as in wand, but as o when it follows other consonants, as in pond. In two experiments, we asked whether children’s spellings of vowels in nonwords were affected by th...

Generalizations over consonants 1 Running head: Generalizations over consonants The quest for generalizations over consonants: Asymmetries between consonants and vowels are not the by-product of acoustic differences

Consonants and vowels may play different roles during language processing, consonants being preferentially involved in lexical processing, and vowels tending to mark syntactic constituency through prosodic cues. In support of this view, artificial language learning studies have demonstrated that consonants (C) support statistical computations, while vowels (V) allow certain structural generaliz...

Articulation accuracy of children using an electrotactile speech processor.

OBJECTIVE Use of wearable tactile speech perception devices is suggested to help overcome the difficulties in speech production resulting from severe and profound hearing impairment in children. This suggestion is based on the assumption that subjects can use tactile input in isolation, or in combination with information from residual aided hearing, to monitor and modify their speech. The prese...
